Year 2021 – the first half of 2022

The business area's net revenue was

0 (12.1) MEUR

The increase in Edita Publishing’s net revenue was attributable to the longer financial year as well as the sales of education materials and digital legal information services.

The area’s operating profit was

0 (2.2) MEUR

Edita Publishing’s operating profit was reduced particularly by seasonal variation with regard to education materials, as the extended financial year included only one half-year period in which the majority of sales takes place.

Year 2021 – the first half of 2022

The reporting period turned out to be successful for Edita Publishing.

The strategic choice to focus on two key core business units, Learning and Legal Information, has helped the company to keep the focus on and develop the needed strategic capabilities for the core businesses.

The Learning business unit provides learning materials and related training for Finnish primary, secondary and higher education.

The start of the sales of the new learning materials for the new Finnish education curriculum in upper secondary school, LOPS 2021, was one of the key events of the year. We were happy to see that our expectations and targets set for the sales of these new learning materials were met during 2021. Also, in general all learning material sales in 2021 exceeded our expectations.

The global COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of learning materials in Finland. Together with the new, free-of-charge secondary education this led to a development where the vast majority of upper secondary schools turned to digital materials.

Edita Publishing made a strategic decision to invest in the primary school learning material market entry and started to build up the capabilities needed, talent acquisition being the core activity. The market expansion is proceeding according to plan.

The Legal Information business segment provides legal information services online, books and training for lawyers and others who need legal information in their profession. The business unit was able to continue delivering strong results also in 2021.

The core of our digital web services, Edilex, continued its year-on-year growth. New digital services were introduced and renewed during the year. The digital legal book library was renewed, and the digital legal training library was introduced.

Edita Publishing has been providing the free public judicial information service Finlex since the late 1990s for Finland’s Ministry of Justice. During the spring, the Legal Register Centre launched a public tendering process for the new version of Finlex and the related service. The final procurement decision and the news about Edita Publishing winning the tender were published after the reporting period in September 2022.

In order to improve our business, we follow and measure our cultural change regularly. During this reporting period we were able to maintain the high level of trust and respect within our organization which forms a solid basis for developing our organization. One of our focus areas has been improving our managerial work towards a coaching way of working. As a result, we can see a positive trend in our managers’ ability to utilize our employees’ strengths and to encourage them to participate in developing our ways of working.

Future prospects

Accelerating digitalization will change the ways of learning and searching for information. The demand for high quality digital learning materials will increase and set expectations for both content and technology used. We will continue to drive growth in the Learning business unit and expect the customer demand to stay strong. The building of our capabilities to enter the primary school market continues.

The Legal Information business unit will continue to focus on its core products and product development to better meet customer needs in a changing business environment, where the rise in professionals working remotely has increased the use of and demand for versatile digital products and services. Winning the Finlex tender speaks in favor of our knowledge and reliability. The new Finlex project will start during the fall of 2022.
